A new era of clean energy procurement: the OpenEAC Exchange
The clean energy certificate exchange to drive real impact, in real buildings, backed by real carbon data.
It’s no secret – RECs are no longer achieving the desired results.
A recent study from Princeton University found that most of the common ways of purchasing clean energy are now having little effect on carbon emissions reductions.
So what’s the alternative?
We need more precise energy deployment and tracking from the voluntary market.
Because the grid is not uniform – some states are further along in decarbonizing than others – simply buying annual, generic clean energy RECs is no longer enough to move the needle.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce the OpenEAC Exchange. The only clean energy certificate market where customers can see the carbon impact of their purchases, tracked to the hour with transparent energy attribute certificates (EACs).
It’s also the first platform to include distributed energy resources, like rooftop solar, heat pumps, and batteries, which can be deployed with speed and precision, where it matters most.
It’s RECs, with purpose.
Giving you visibility to deploy clean energy where and when fossil fuel-generated power would have been used instead.
It’s RECs from batteries, at 8pm, when carbon is sky high.
It’s RECs from rooftop solar, in West Virginia, where power still mostly comes from coal.
It’s RECs for energy efficiency, in schools, to foster a better learning environment for our kids.
The OpenEAC Exchange provides RECs with purpose, so we can scale clean energy that cuts carbon and builds communities - today.
A new way to buy clean energy
As an open access exchange, anyone can browse and buy EACs on demand - no broker required. WattCarbon is working with dozens of clean energy suppliers across the country, with the list growing every day, to direct funding towards deploying more distributed resources and lowering costs for consumers. Companies like BlocPower, which is working to install heat pumps for low-income residents, and Gemini Energy, which is bringing clean energy hubs to Black church communities.
The Marketplace is designed to make high-quality energy impact accessible to all companies.
“If we’re going to be serious about decarbonization, we need to make high-impact clean energy buying accessible to anyone,” says McGee Young, WattCarbon’s CEO. “For too long, anonymous RECs have been the only option for most sustainability teams. This is a new pathway to have a demonstrable impact.”
Design your own impact story
Distributed clean energy also provides sustainability buyers with the flexibility to design an impact story that’s authentic. Do you have a strong commitment to your HQ community? Fund clean energy projects in your own backyard. Is climate resilience important to your company? Fund batteries, to reduce energy use and avoid blackouts during peak hours.
There are so many varieties of energy impact, and all are required.
So check it out! Read our partners’ stories about the impact they’re making in communities nationwide. And design your own impact story today with the OpenEAC Exchange.
