Introducing Supplier Storefronts: purchase EACs directly from the clean energy suppliers you love
Say hello to Supplier Storefronts – a peer-to-peer marketplace for transactions of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs).
Introducing the latest development from the WattCarbon Marketplace: Supplier Storefronts – a peer-to-peer marketplace for transactions of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs).
Storefronts are the destination to connect clean energy suppliers and buyers, enabling suppliers to tell their unique impact story and buyers to make direct EAC investments aligned with their goals.
“Buyers should have the right to complete information about projects and their impacts – an aspect lacking in legacy markets. We’re changing that by removing the gatekeepers and connecting suppliers and buyers directly,” explains WattCarbon’s CEO, McGee Young.
Empowering sellers with branded Storefronts
Storefronts take EAC investments beyond carbon emissions or watt-hours and translate them into real, tangible stories that help buyers and sellers identify shared values.
Featuring distributed clean energy suppliers across the U.S., WattCarbon’s Supplier Storefronts enable net zero buyers to purchase Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) directly from companies and projects that align with their unique impact goals.
EAC sellers can set up their own branded Storefronts and fully describe the types of projects they are deploying and the impacts on local communities they are delivering.
“It can be hard for us to get our message out about our work,” says Anthony Kinslow II, CEO of Gemini Energy Solutions, “but the Storefront helps us connect with buyers interested in high-impact EAC purchases.”
Tailored procurement for specific needs
Starting now, buyers can directly purchase existing EACs through the WEATS Marketplace or make a custom procurement request for new EACs that meet certain requirements. “We’ve made it possible to dial in a specific set of requirements and find the impact that meets them all,” explains Julia Bunte-Mein, the WEATS Marketplace product manager.
If buyers are looking for battery storage EACs, they can visit the Branch Energy Storefront to participate in a first-of-its-kind vPPA.
Or perhaps they’re interested in boosting climate resilience by scaling up demand response during this summer’s record-breaking heat waves, in which case, they can buy EACs directly from the Leap Storefront, supporting projects in California during extreme heat episodes.
The WEATS advantage: unmatched transparency
WattCarbon can provide this level of transparency because it also runs WEATS, the only EAC Registry providing a unique ID number for every watt-hour of clean energy. Every relevant attribute of a project is made known to buyers, allowing them to select the characteristics of an energy certificate that matter most, such as location, social impact, or emissions savings.
Ensuring credibility through the OpenEAC Alliance
To ensure that the EACs for sale on the WEATS Marketplace are properly vetted, all sellers must publish their Measurement and Verification (M&V) methodologies and submit them for review to the OpenEAC Alliance, a voluntary consortium of stakeholders with relevant domain experience.
“Investing in decarbonization is the most valuable and impactful form of climate action available to us, but like all other markets, this requires practitioners to show their work and explain their counterfactual assumptions,” says Steve Kromer, senior advisor to the OpenEAC Alliance.
A rapidly expanding Marketplace
Since the launch of the WEATS Marketplace in May, there has been a significant increase in participation. The number of companies involved has doubled, offering EACs from a diverse array of energy projects, including electrification initiatives, load shifting, demand flexibility, combined solar and storage solutions, and local microgrids.
George Whittlesey, who oversees enrollments for WattCarbon, notes the marketplace's growth: “There are tremendous opportunities to accelerate the energy transition by unlocking EACs to help make these projects more affordable for end consumers.”
Delivering ease and transparency for clean energy buyers
Buyers need a streamlined procurement process where custom solutions can be assessed, purchased, and managed in one easy-to-use platform. WattCarbon’s Supplier Storefronts do just that, giving organizations visibility to deploy clean energy where and when fossil fuel-generated power would have been used instead.
“Today's net zero buyers are under increasing pressure to deliver high-impact work across scopes 1, 2, and 3. Similarly, distributed clean energy suppliers need access to capital to get new decarbonization projects off the ground. The WEATS Marketplace and our new Supplier Storefronts connect the two; ensuring clean energy investments are made into communities nationwide,” shares Young.
