In case you missed it, we got some exciting coverage in Fast Company last week for our new Energy Transition Marketplace. The article took a deep dive into the marketplace mechanics, as well as the big picture goals of what we’re trying to achieve.
One of our biggest goals in creating this marketplace is to provide an alternative to low-impact (and frankly, fraudulent) carbon markets. In 2021, $2 billion was spent in the voluntary carbon offset market, and that’s expected to grow to $10-40 billion by 2030. Report after report show that most of that money won’t do anything to advance our climate goals or heal our planet that’s rapidly moving toward catastrophe.
A New Type of Climate Action
What we’ve launched is the antithesis of today’s carbon market, and is designed to maximize climate impact. It’s built around three principles that are needed to fight climate change.
We need to eliminate fossil fuels as quickly as possible.
We need to measure our impact, so we know we’re making progress.
We need to transform our highest emitting sectors, driving permanent change.
Building decarbonization is the culmination of these three actions. Every day, 20,000 new fossil fuel powered appliances are installed; we can replace this with clean energy technology. Our platform aggregates emissions data, metered consumption and production data, along with weather and other related data, giving us transparent measurement of our carbon reduction impact. And transforming our buildings to be clean energy-powered and grid connected will result in a permanent reduction in emissions - nearly enough to single-handedly meet the goals of the Paris Climate Accords.
Our goal is to make this the largest voluntary effort ever, redirecting the billions in carbon offsets to decarbonization technology that will transform our built environment and eliminate fossil fuels for good.
Check out the Fast Company piece at the link below for more on how the marketplace works. We’d love to hear from you at info@wattcarbon.com if you’re interested in learning more, have questions, or simply want to talk about scaling climate action.
So excited for Wattcarbon!
